Types of Juicers

Centrifugal (fast) Juicers

These spin the fruit and veggies at high speeds and use centrifugal force to separate the pulp (hence its name) from the juice. They are the most popular and cheapest form of juicer.

PROS:

  • Fast.
  • They often have large feed chutes, so fruit needs less chopping.
  • Storage cords.
  • Most have dishwasher-safe sections.
  • Often come with pulp-filled juice jugs and containers.

CONS:

  • Probably noisy.
  • Filtering can be hard to clean, but with cleaning brushes.
  • It can be heavy.
  • Some parts spin at high velocities resulting in vibration.
  • Juice can sparkle and may not taste in the fridge after a few days

Cold (slow) Juicers

Auger (single gear), twin-gear, horizontal or vertical, non-centrifugal or soft or chewing juicers. These are often referred to as cold press juicers, but this is just a term used to refer to a method of extracting olive oil from olives to get extra virgin olive oil so we tend to call this slow juicer. Both types slowly break fruit / vegetable, directing juice and fruit from two different chutes.

PROS:

  • Quiet.
  • Have smaller parts, clean them better.
  • Long warranty Vertical types tend to have smaller footprints.
  • Coffee beans grinding; sausages, pasta / noodles, seasonings, nut butter, soy milk, baby food and ice cream making; and smoothies.
  • Many people think the resulting juice is less frothy and appealing.

CONS:

  • Costly.
  • Most have multiple parts to wash directly after use, so the juicer doesn’t get sticky or stainy.
  • They usually don’t have dishwashing appropriate bits. Slow; models should require about 5-6 minutes of juicing.
  • Horizontal types can be heavy, taking valuable bench space.
  • Lean into smaller chutes that need fruit and veggies cut into small pieces; and sometimes give them a good push.

What juicer is best for diet?

Temperature
Few slow-juicer manufacturers say centrifugal juicers heat up juice during the process, causing the juice to lose nutrients or vitamins. Before and after juicing, we tested the temperature of fruits and vegetables and there was no substantial difference in temperature changes for both slow and fast juicers.

Which juicer keeps juice fresh for longer?
Slow juicers produce smooth, frothy juice. The juice’s appealing after 48 hours. The smell is nice, it has a fruity aroma, and it looks like a fuzzy light green juice with froth on top and sand on sides.

Fast juicers don’t hold up: they produce a smooth yet frothy juice and a deeply unpleasant smell come in after 48 hours. The taste is OK, but not as good, with an unpleasant aftertaste and deep, amber look. A thick oxidized froth and base sediment separate at the tip.

Buying Tips

Parts
Your juicer should be placed, removed as quickly as possible. Parts should be easy to clean, not trapped with corners or crevices.

Size
You want a juicer that takes up less space on the table unless your kitchen is huge. When you’re paying a lot of money for one guy, you want to keep it at the bench where it’s most used, and if you place it in the cupboard, you’ll most likely leave it.

Juicers can be heavy, weighing 4-10 pounds, so you don’t want to walk too often. Many vertical slow juicers take up less space than fast juicers, being very narrow in width and depth.

Pulp Container
Requires to be large enough to hold the device stopped to drain it.

Chute
A big chute means you don’t have to cut fruit and veggies too low. An excellent chute size can accommodate an average size apple.

Blade
Make sure the blade assembly can not be easily accessed by the chute, especially the small fingers.

Jar
It’s safer to have a big juice bottle with 1000ml of juice from 1 kg fruits and veggies. You needn’t be halfway through emptying the bottle. The container should have a comfortable handle and smooth spout.

Ensure that the spout fits over a proper size jug if the juicer does not come in with a juice bottle.

Smoothie attachment
Several slow juicers and several fast juicers have a smoothi attachment good for processing soft fruits like bananas, peaches, mango and berries.

Cleaning brushes
Cleaning Brushes Good for round blade area cleaning and fibrous stuck filters.

Cord storage
Cord Storage Useful for table uncluttering.

Control switch
Switch Easily access settings.

Speeds (fast juicers)
Multi-speeds are ideal. High speed is ideal for juicing hard fruit / vegetables and low-speed fruit / vegetables.

Reverse feature (slow juicer)
If the juicer has to be unblocked, a reverse feature is helpful.

Juicer attachments

Some stand (benchtop) mixers and food processors allow to connect special juicer attachments. These are often paired with the mixer/processor, or can be purchased separately.

While this eliminates the need to buy a dedicated juicer, they can function and maintain a bit fiddly, and may not be suitable for certain fruit and vegetable forms.
